“So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past.” ~F. Scott Fitzgerald
This quote is from my favorite novel, The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald. A drastic, romantic story held back in the roaring 20s. When I first heard this quote I didn’t really understand it. I failed to grasp it’s true meaning. But after I read the story of man stuck on his past and wanting to relive it because of his feeling of love for her, I began to realize that it is true. “We beat on” to our goal or to whatever we want to achieve, and we travel against our current situation or whatever we are going through at the moment to look back into the past because it has such a hold on us. It’s inspirational because our past affects who we are on a daily basis and sometimes we just want to go back and change it to make it better but we can’t. So we fail to understand that past is what made them who they are today when they try to forget it.
